Detalles de la oferta

Applications are invited for a Southern Ocean Marine Physicist with a focus on circulation and climate.
The post will contribute to two ongoing projects.
The first is the 20-year time series of repeat hydrography in Drake Passage that monitors the changing climate in the Southern Ocean and contributes to the UK's sustained observing system and National Capability in Repeat Hydrography.
The second project is a NERC grant to investigate the physical processes underpinning the oceanic delivery of heat to the rapidly melting ice shelves of West Antarctica.
The position will focus on the analysis of a range of novel observations of oceanic processes and ice-ocean interaction collected near Pine Island Glacier in the Amundsen Sea Embayment, within the NERC iSTAR programme.
The successful candidate will join the Ocean Circulation and Processes group, home to the UK's National Capability in Argo and Repeat hydrography and the RAPID-MOC array.
You will work closely with the team examining the physical processes relevant to the dynamics of the Southern Ocean circulation.
The group includes an active sea-going team, numerical modellers and theoreticians.
You will collaborate with other UK and international scientists where appropriate.
Both projects have fieldwork components in which you will be expected to participate.
This post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is available for up to 4 years.
Salary: This post is offered on NERC terms and conditions, with indicative salaries at Band 6 (Staff Scientist) being £26,450 to £29,710 per annum and Band 5 (Senior Staff Scientist) being £31,020 to £37,500 per annum (depending upon experience).
About you: You should have a PhD, or equivalent research experience, in Physical Oceanography and experience of analysis of in situ oceanographic data and have led or shown the potential to lead research projects.
You will have a good knowledge of ocean dynamics and strong quantitative and communication skills, and the ability to conduct innovative research leading to high-impact publications in international refereed journals.
What we can offer you: In return for your talents, we offer a competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 10.5 Public/privilege days and free car-parking.
Opportunities for further training and development are supported.

Closing date: 1 December 2013.
