Peru Strengthening Systems for Health Security Activity (SSHS): Animal and Wildlife Health Technical Lead

The USAID-funded Strengthening Systems for Health Security Activity (SSHS) is an anticipated 5-year $19 million project to be implemented in Peru. This project aims to help Peru build robust capabilities in preventing, detecting, and responding to infectious diseases and health threats to ensure national and global health security (GHS). The Peru SSHS Activity will work to achieve this goal by working on three objectives: (1) Better Prevention of Infectious Diseases Through the Reduction of Disease Transmission from Animals to Human Populations, (2) Better Detection of Infectious Diseases Through Improved Surveillance Systems, and (3) Effective Response to Infectious Disease Outbreaks Through a Skilled and Competent Health Security Workforce.

Reporting and Supervision: This full-time position will report to the Peru SSHS Project Director.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The Animal and Wildlife Health Technical Lead (AWHTL)
will serve as the key technical expert and leader of the animal and wildlife health related components of this Activity and will be responsible for developing and leading the animal and wildlife health technical approach of this Activity. The AWHTL will work closely with the Public Health Team Lead and the Environment Team Lead to provide technical support in the development and implementation of a One Health approach as it relates to GHS and the objectives of this Activity. The AWHTL is expected to introduce and contextualize globally recognized animal and wildlife health practices, research, and evidence to strengthen health security systems of Peru using a One Health approach.

- Lead the implementation of all activities linked to animal and wildlife health for the Activity, ensuring close coordination with the other Technical Leads for a cohesive One Health overall approach.

- Ensure the technical integrity, quality, impact and feasibility of all project interventions and activities related to animal and wildlife health, including cross-sectional interventions.
- Provide overall technical direction, leadership, and expertise to the project team in proposing innovative interventions, designing and delivering the project's guiding principles and objectives linked to animal and wildlife health.
- In coordination with the Project Director, participate in strategic discussions and planning events with key government entities, as well as representatives of consortium partners, private sector, academia and civil society.
- Represent the activity at different national and subnational stakeholder meetings and technical working groups as relevant.

- Provide technical assistance and guidance on the latest health developments, publications, and other information generation activities nationwide and globally.
- Coordinate with those subcontractors and grant recipients under the Activity that are implementing work linked to Animal and Wildlife Health, ensuring timely and proper implementation of their work.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications and Key Competencies Required:

- A higher education degree in veterinary, wildlife sciences, or related animal and wildlife fields is required; relevant professional experience working in the field of animal and/or wildlife health, Global Health Security, and One Health is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in One Health, health governance,
laboratory systems, surveillance, outbreak investigation, and/or outbreak response is required.
- Solid knowledge of animal and wildlife health issues and challenges in Peru is preferred.
- Optimal interpersonal, writing, and English language skills.
- Relevant experience working on projects with similar scopes and within the Latin American region is preferred.
