Position Summary :
The Communications and External Affairs Specialist is responsible for developing, executing,
and managing internal and external communication strategies that support the company's goals, enhance its reputation, and build strong relationships with key stakeholders.
Reporting to the Corporate Affairs Manager, this role involves crafting clear and compelling messages for diverse audiences including employees, local communities, authorities, investors, unions, potential contractors, suppliers, and the general public to maintain the company's social license to operate.
The role also entails representing the company in public forums, advising senior leadership on external political, regulatory, and social issues, and leading crisis communications efforts.
The specialist will manage stakeholder relationships, coordinate communication-driven events, and ensure consistent messaging that aligns with the company's vision, corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies.
Key Responsibilities :
Corporate Communications :
- Develop and execute comprehensive communication plans to promote the company's vision, mission, operations,
and CSR initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.
- Create, edit, and distribute content for press releases, newsletters, company statements, media kits, speeches, sustainability reports, website content, and internal communications.
- Manage the company's social media presence, ensuring active engagement across platforms with a focus on sustainability and operational transparency.
- Coordinate with various departments to highlight projects, achievements, and contributions to sustainable mining practices.
- Develop the company's branding strategy and ensure proper use across events, presentations, and external materials.
- Organize and oversee communication-driven events such as press conferences, media briefings, public hearings, community outreach meetings, and employee engagement activities.
External Affairs and Stakeholder Management :
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, community leaders, and regulatory bodies.
- Represent the company in public forums, meetings, and industry events to address concerns, enhance collaboration, and promote transparency.
- Provide strategic advice to senior leadership on political, regulatory, and social trends that may impact company operations.
- Monitor media coverage and industry trends, advising on communication risks and opportunities.
Crisis Communication :
- Lead crisis communication efforts, including developing response strategies and ensuring timely, accurate communication with all stakeholders during critical situations.
- Maintain clear lines of communication with media, employees,
and stakeholders during crises to mitigate reputational risks.
Community Relations and Sustainability :
- Collaborate with the sustainability team to engage with local communities, ensuring that the company's projects align with local interests and promote long-term social development.
- Support the organization of community outreach programs, providing transparent information on company activities and addressing concerns of local residents.
- Participate in communication areas of relevant industry institutions and chambers.
Internal Communications :
- Develop and manage internal communication initiatives to keep employees informed and engaged, including newsletters, memos, and corporate updates.
- Support employee engagement programs and enhance the corporate culture in collaboration with the Human Resources department.
- Promote spokesperson training and alignment,
preparing relevant company representatives for media interviews and public appearances.
Reporting and Measurement :
- Assist in the preparation of annual reports, sustainability reports, and management presentations.
- Measure and report on the effectiveness of communication strategies and campaigns, making adjustments as necessary to meet organizational goals.
Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field.
- Proven experience (10+ years) in corporate communications, public relations, or external affairs, ideally within the mining, energy, oil and gas, or related sectors.
- Strong understanding of the mining industry's operational, environmental, and social challenges, especially in Peru.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Spanish and English, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
- Experience with digital communication strategies, including social media management and content creation.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and social media platforms.
- High emotional intelligence and the ability to work with diverse groups and stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills, teamwork-oriented, and ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
- Knowledge of CSR initiatives, sustainability reporting, and ESG policies.
- Adaptability to changing work environments and demands.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Experience working in the mining industry or large-scale industrial projects.
- Familiarity with indigenous communities and the social dynamics of mining regions in Peru.
