Job Description This Farmer-to-Farmer assignment will be implemented in Neshuya, Padre Abad province in Ucayali, Peru.
The goal of this assignment is to support the members of Colpa de Loros who work in cacao with processes and layout for mucilage by-products production.
Participants will: Identify bottle necks to collect mucilage and produce honey, molasse, liqueur (mucilage by-products). Establish processes to develop cacao mucilage syrup (honey) and other by products Differentiate between artisanal and industrial production needs (processes, equipment among others) Deliverables: Analyze Colpa's operation and identify bottle necks to start production of different mucilage by-products: syrup (honey), liqueur, and molasses. Discuss innocuous practice, operation, costs, control points and processes to start production of different mucilage by-products. Draft start up plan for manufacturing mucilage by-product Training on processes for production of mucilage by-products, innocuity, control points and/or equipment to start up operations.
Provide feedback for liqueur industrialization grant application (equipment, costs, and control points) A Trip Report with SMART Recommendations that will help to improve the Host Organization business. An outreach activity.
Upon return to the United States, the volunteer is asked to share his or her Farmer-to-Farmer Program experience with their community and networks.
Qualifications Engineer or related profession with experience on food production processes, and innocuity.
Knowledgeable on mucilage, fermentation, distillation, syrups/honey, and confectionary.
Experience in artisanal (farmer organizations) production desirable. Experience with adult group facilitation and with the ability to transmit his/her knowledge in a non-technical language.
Spanish language skills are preferable but not mandatory.
Additional Information SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL ALSO HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to be flexible and available for two week volunteer assignments; Desire to promote cross-cultural learning and exchanges through technical assistance; Available for virtual communications with Host Organization and Staff; U.S. citizen or resident; and Advanced English language skills in reading, writing, and speaking.
