Financial Controller

Our division's purpose
The Financial Controller works in the Corporate Operations and Services Division, under the Finance business unit. The division ensures the delivery of exceptional experiences for Museum visitors and employees. Its primary role is to appropriately support the Museum's operations by providing advice on financial, human resource, ICT and facilities issues, while also overseeing key governance functions including managing risk, legislative and regulatory compliance, strategic planning and reporting. The division also has responsibility for the Museum's visitor services and commercial functions.
Role purpose
The Financial Controller will report directly to the Museum's Chief Finance Officer (CFO). They will be a trusted advisor and deputy to the CFO, taking a leadership role, both within the Finance team and more broadly across the Museum, driving financial management practices and improvements. The Financial Controller will lead financial projects and activities, modelling accountability and sound decision-making. This role represents an important part of the Museum's approach to succession planning for the finance function.
Responsibilities
Working directly to the CFO, supporting the Finance team's assistant managers, and collaborating widely across the Museum and with key external stakeholders, your responsibilities will include:

Providing financial leadership and advice to support the CFO and help the Museum achieve its financial and strategic priorities.
Driving change by implementing and improving financial management practices within the Finance team and across each of the Museum business areas.
Identifying and delivering organisation wide finance projects and performance improvement initiatives that align with the Museum's strategic and risk management priorities and improve operational efficiencies and financial outcomes.
Being a trusted advisor across the Museum's suite of financial activities including internal and external budgeting and forecasting; annual financial statement preparation and end of month reporting; treasury management; financial operations including accounts payable/receivable and travel; taxation and compliance; asset management; procurement; and commercial decision-making.
Designing and implementing a robust internal control and compliance environment, including redesigning systems and processes to improve integrity and efficiency.
Representing the Museum and developing strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
Leading and building team culture, capacity and capability, while demonstrating an awareness and personal commitment to the APS Values and Code of Conduct.

You will work in a small team, providing leadership and guidance in tandem with the CFO, while also being able to work effectively and productively with the Museum's Executive, managers and employees.
Skills, experience and qualifications
Essential/desired:
We are seeking a candidate with extensive financial management experience, ideally across a broad range of financial management functions and disciplines, including:

high-level financial strategy and advice, delivered at the board and executive levels
financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and scenario testing
financial reporting, annual financial statements preparation, accounting standards interpretation and implementation, and month-end close activities
financial and commercial modelling and decision-making.

The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of the Commonwealth's financial and resource management framework and broader legislative environment (or comparable exposure and experience at the state/territory government level or in the not-for-profit sector). They will have worked in and led small finance teams and understand the challenges and requirements of developing and supporting multi-disciplinary teams with multiple competing priorities. They will model integrity and accountability.
An ability to deliver financial information across all levels of an organisation, and to partner and support business operations are essential. Qualifications in finance, accounting, commerce, business or a related field, and membership of a professional accounting body, would be highly beneficial.
