Post-Doctoral Associate – Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center Post-Doctoral Associate in coupled ocean-ice-atmosphere modeling and data assimilation Department: UMD/ESSICStarting Salary: Commensurate with ExperienceClosing Date: Thursday, June 30, 2016 Duties:The Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) are recruiting a Post-Doctoral Associate to specialize in coupled ocean-ice-atmosphere modeling and data assimilation (DA) in the context of decadal climate variability. The selected applicant will work closely with scientists from the University of Maryland, NASA GSFC, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The project involves developing and analyzing a novel prototype, property-conserving, ocean-ice-atmosphere model and DA system based on the "replay" capability of the Goddard Earth Observing System Model, Version 5 (GEOS-5) in conjunction with the adjoint-model capabilities of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model (MITgcm). The resulting DA system and inferred solution will be used to study recent Arctic or Antarctic sea ice changes and their relation to the coupled ocean-atmosphere system. The initial period of scientific interest covers the satellite altimetric record (1992 to present). Qualifications:Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Climate Dynamics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with a strong interest in Earth System observations, models, and science questions. Experience in numerical modeling (especially with GEOS-5 or MITgcm) and observational data analysis is highly desirable. Familiarity with supercomputing environments and related programming languages (in particular Linux and Fortran), as well as analysis tools (Matlab or Python) are essential. Written and oral communication skills sufficient to lead manuscripts and present research at conferences are also desirable. Starting Date and Duration of Appointment: Position begins immediately, is a one-year appointment with the option to extend an additional two years. To Apply: Interested candidates should send a CV with a list of at least 3 professional references and a cover letter explaining how your qualifications meet the posted requirements to ******.
