Under close supervision, perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance of trees in parks, street medians and other designated areas; operate and maintain mechanized equipment and perform related work as required.
Job Characteristics: May work a varying schedule of hours which may include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Trim street trees.
2.
Assist in the mixing of insecticides; spray trees and shrubs.
3.
Replace dead trees; assist in the mass planting of new street trees.
4.
Water street trees as needed.
5.
Stake and re-tie street trees as needed.
6.
May be assigned to operate small equipment and mechanized hand tools.
7.
Remove weeds and trash from roadside areas.
8.
Perform other "housekeeping" duties as may be assigned.
Knowledge of: 1.
The methods, materials, and equipment used in trimming and caring for trees and shrubs.
2.
Methods of rigging such as ropes, lines, tackle, and guy wires and various knots used for rigging.
3.
Trees, growing patterns and diseases, pesticides and herbicides and proper application.
4.
Trees, tree trimming, planting and spraying.
5.
Safe work practices.
Ability to: 1.
Read, write and carry out oral and written directions.
2.
Make occasional reports and keep simple records.
3.
Assist in the operation of spray equipment, chainsaw, chipper and various other pieces of tree trimming equipment.
4.
Make proper cuts to drop limbs and remove trees.
5.
Climb trees with ropes and saddles.
6.
Maintain cooperative working relationships.
7.
Make minor repairs to tree trimming equipment desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: When work is performed on site, there is full exposure to the elements.
The incumbent drives a vehicle on City business and may stand and walk on uneven and slippery surfaces.
The incumbent climbs trees and ladders, kneels, bends, crouches, twists, crawls, pushes and pulls, reaches, grasps and lifts items weighing up to 50 pounds.
The incumbent may work above shoulder level with power and/or hand tools weighing up to 25 pounds and may be exposed to pesticides, dust, electrical and mechanical hazards, extreme vibration and noise.
The Tree Trimmer I must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities.
A typical way to obtain these would be: education equivalent to high school graduation and one year apprentice-level experience in tree care and maintenance or related field.
A valid California Class B driver's license is required by the end of the incumbent's probation.
A valid California driver's license is required.
