These individuals are medical professionals who provide assessment and advice usually to just one mission president and his wife regarding health challenges that the missionaries may be faced with.
They do not practice medicine but instead give advice and ascertain that the care being provided by local providers is adequate.
This senior service missionary will help the Church fulfill its divinely appointed responsibility to help facilitate gathering Israel through missionary work.
Senior service missionary serves as an adviser to the mission president on missionary health matters.
This includes, but is not limited to:
Providing over the phone assessment and advice based on Missionary Department Health Services policies and guidelines.
Providing assistance to determine if a visit to local care, urgent care, or ER is needed, and approve the visit as directed by the mission president.
Providing education on preventive and self-care suggestions.
Attending the Mission Health Council.
Entering notes into eMED (Missionary Medical tracking system).
Senior service missionaries who are practicing physicians may serve as MHAs.
They do not charge for medical care they provide for missionaries within their mission because of the conflict of interest that exists from sitting on the Mission Health Council.
Minimum Requirements:
Mission health adviser must be a medical doctor, physician assistant, nurse (NP, RN or LPN) or mental health counselor - active practice or recently retired.
Knowledge of, and ability to perform, basic computer skills like emails.
Understand the necessity to maintain confidentiality while private and sensitive matters are discussed.
Have own transportation.
Service missionaries must be temple worthy.
